Crissy was a divorced mother with two young children when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The cost of cancer treatment quickly added up and put a financial strain on her. A self-employed real estate agent, Crissy had to drive several hours to treatments in Salt Lake City. Travel expenses and doctor bills took their toll, and Crissy was edging closer to becoming homeless. She even skipped some chemotherapy appointments in order to stay financially afloat. It wasn’t until 2016 that the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge® – Salt Lake City community opened its doors. An American Cancer Society Hero of Hope, Crissy spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony about knowing first-hand how this facility can benefit patients. Finally, she got her home away from home when treatment was far away.
