Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a major Hindu festival celebrated in India and other parts of the Indian subcontinent. It usually falls in the month of September or October, depending on the Hindu calendar. The word "Dussehra" is derived from the Sanskrit words "Dasha" meaning ten and "hara" meaning defeat, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

The festival commemorates the triumph of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana, as narrated in the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. According to the story, Lord Rama, along with his wife Sita and his loyal companion Hanuman, defeated Ravana and rescued Sita from his captivity after a fierce battle.

In various parts of India, Dussehra is celebrated in different ways:

Ramlila: This is a dramatic reenactment of the life of Lord Rama, often performed over a period of ten days leading up to Dussehra. The performance culminates in the burning of effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakarna, and his son Meghnad, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

Ayudha Puja: On this day, people worship their tools, instruments, and vehicles as a sign of gratitude for the support they provide in their livelihoods. It's also seen as a way to seek blessings for success in their work.

Durga Puja: In some parts of India, particularly in West Bengal, Dussehra is the last day of the grand celebration of Durga Puja. On this day, idols of Goddess Durga are immersed in water bodies.

Goddess Saraswati Puja: In certain regions, Dussehra is associated with the worship of Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, and arts. Students pray to Saraswati for wisdom and success in their studies.

Processions and Fairs: Many places hold grand processions with decorated idols and effigies, along with cultural performances and fairs.
