The Battle of Vimy Ridge in April of 1917 was both an extraordinary victory as well as a deadly slaughter that resulted in more than 10 000 casualties.
As a result of to the implementation of new tactics, superior coordination of indirect fire support along with meticulous planning and preparation. The victory at the battle of Vimy Ridge would help the allied powers achieve the longest advance into German held territory since the beginning of the war, surpassing the record set by the French at the battle of the somme. After Vimy ridge, the first Canadian Corps would gain the reputation of an elite fighting force and continue dominating the battlefield until the capitulation of the German empire in 1918.
Today, the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, a monument dedicated to the memory of the Canadian Corps members who died during the First World War, sits atop of hill 145. The memorial stands as a symbol of national pride for Canada as well as the embodiment of the Canadian fighting spirit
