One of the most revered and feared Australian authors. Our only Nobel prize for literature winner, Patrick White. A formidable figure, and one who made it acceptable to be and identify as an Australian writer in Australia. After Patrick White began publishing in Australia in the 1950's the whole literary landscape began to change. No longer did writers have to flee to England to seek legitimacy. No longer were uniquely Australian stories forced to be mangled through a foreign lens, but could be told unashamedly as Australian stories.
Australian writers owe a huge debt to Patrick White, which is why I think we should, stop being intimidated and learn to love our spiky old man of letters.
