This video provides a quick overview of how to add a newborn baby to your visa application or residency status and what you should do from an immigration perspective in the cases of both finalised and unfinalised applications.
Not all children born in Australia gain citizenship at the time of birth. For temporary resident parents, their children get the same visa as the parents. If you hold a valid Temporary visa, you should be able to add the child to your visa easily. If both parents are temporary visa holders, the child will almost certainly not be an Australian citizen at birth. If one of the parents is a permanent resident or citizen, the child may be eligible for Australian citizenship directly. This video is helpful for all the applicants who have either submitted or received a temporary or a permanent visa of Australia.
Once you have a baby, you will be given a birth card from the hospital and a few weeks later you will usually receive the birth certificate, after which you should do two things:
- You must tell Department of Home Affairs about your baby as soon as possible via Form 1022 (even if he/she doesn't have a passport yet), so that they can determine whether your baby can be added to your current visa and any pending visa applications you have
- Request a Passport from your home country (if applicable).
