Our plan to document hard corals spawning was shattered when the reef at Pantai Pasir Cina, Pulau Bidong was badly damaged by Pabuk Storm. The reef recovery heavily rely on new coral settlement.
After five years of documenting the coral spawning, we voyaged into the uncharted area: Coral Larvae Seeding aim to help accelerate the coral recruitment rate.
We had to (restlessly) work around clock for seven days (from the spawning night until the coral planulae ready to settle). Then, released the larvae back into the reef at Pantai Pasir Cina in hoped that this will accelerate the coral recruitment rate.
Over half a million larvae that we released mostly not significant compared to the natural coral spawning. However, we envision that this baby step would one day become something important in saving the coral reefs.
Lastly, some of the larvae were used to investigate the impacts of climate change on corals. Climate Change still the BIGGEST threat to coral reefs and we need to take immediate action to fight it.
