Doors open and window, mask on. I try to ventilate my workshop as best I can before mixing and sieving my glazes.
Before the events in this video, all the raw materials you can see here have been dumped into a bucket half filled with water, this way less dust is launched into the air, compared to say, if you placed all the dry ingredients into the bucket, and then splashed water over them. You don’t want to breathe this stuff in, glaze dust, long-term exposure can potentially lead to silicosis, so as soon as I tip the powdery kaolin or feldspar in, I quickly set the lid on top of the container and leave it for a few moments, until the worst has settled.
Once slaked down a bit, I stick the mixer in, turn it on, and leave it for 10-15 minutes, (whilst I’m doing other jobs, preparing more glazes, and so on), then it’s all pushed through a 100-mesh sieve and finally it’s ready to use, for pots to be dipped into. If you happen to watch until the end, you’ll see how it looks once reduction fired to 1290ºc.
