Today's Highlights:
While speaking at a media conference earlier today, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley officially confirmed he will not be running in the next general election and will resign before the legal term of his office comes to an end.
• Dr Rowley is a member of the House of Representatives for Diego Martin West in the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago, where he has represented that constituency since 1991 to present. (33 years)
• He has also been in public life for the past 45 years.
While addressing the decision to not implement a curfew during the state of emergency, Dr Rowley said that this was done because the government did not want to interfere with law-abiding citizens’ rights to assemble.
Dr. Rowley also said that they are not changing the foundation of the law or permanently removing the fundamental rights and freedom of our citizens; however, desperate circumstances have caused them to take the action to implement a state of emergency and it is an action provided under law and no other place but the constitution.
The Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago condemned Randall Hector's brutal murder and called for security for all prosecutors and judicial officers.
A man died after he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the Priority bus route in San Juan on Thursday 2nd January, 2025.
• The deceased was identified as 59-year-old Marlon Benjamin of Back Street, Tunapuna.
76-year-old William Cardiff of Richardson Street, Fyzabad was found lying on his stomach, with his head resting on the edge of a concrete drain near his home Thursday 2nd January 2025.
Two men died in two separate incidents after they were crushed by their vehicles less than two hours apart on Tuesday 31st December, 2024.
In the first incident around 4:20pm, a man identified as 51-year-old Wazeem Mohammed of Ramcharan Drive, Factory Road, Piarco, was doing some mechanical under his silver Nissan Tiida, which was raised using a scissor jack and a block of wood.
Less than an hour and a half later, another man identified as 59-year-old Matthew Theroulde, was doing some repair work under a vehicle at his Prizgar Road, San Juan home, when the jack slipped and pinned him underneath.
The state-assisted funeral service for the late MP Mrs. Lisa Morris Julian and her children Xianne & Jesiah Julian took place on Thursday 2nd January, 2025 at the Santa Rosa RC Church, Arima.
• The trio died following a fire at their home at Farfan Street, Arima, early on Monday 16th December, 2024.
