‘Ae Fond Kiss’ was written by Burns on 27 December 1791 and is often thought to be one of his most recorded pieces. He wrote the poem for Mrs Agnes (Nancy) McLehose, with whom he had been corresponding with for several years. It is understood they used the pseudonyms ‘Sylvander’ and 'Clarinda’ in their letters.
