Advice to those who are learning to carve-the white pine boards I use in making my work can carve easier from one direction than the other. This is what I call “squiggly grain”, wood that behaves well when carved from one direction but not when carved from the other. Carved one way a chip pops off neatly but carved in the other direction my knife just wants to burrow deeper into the wood. I don’t have much thickness of wood to waste so I like to stay in control of the grain by rotating the board as I carve. This may not happen with other woods such as basswood but it certainly happens with white pine.
