Although Mrs Bennet, and probably Lydia herself, would have preferred that she marry at Meryton, surrounded by friends and family, going back home unmarried after disappearing with Mr Wickham was not an option. So Lydia gets married in London, with her aunt and uncle as her witnesses and Mr Darcy as Mr Wickham's.
If the Bennet's thought this was the end of their troubles, they were wrong. First, Wickham was "compensated", then they promised a hundred pounds a year for Lydia, and now Mr Gardiner has had to settle Wickham's debts in Brighton and Mr Bennet will have to settle the ones in Meryton. What an absolute mess! You found yourself a gem, Lydia.
