STORYLINE:
EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana met Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo on Saturday, where the two discussed ongoing peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
"We will have important meetings in New York of the Quartet, the Quartet plus the Arabs, meeting with different formations with different countries from the region and see how we go with the determination to see we can move the process forward," Solana told reporters following the meeting.
The Quartet of Mideast mediators, made up of negotiators from the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia, is due to meet in New York at the end of the month.
"Important events are going to take place," Solana said.
Mubarak also met on Saturday with Spanish Foreign Minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos, on a six-day tour of the Middle East in an effort to boost ties and express support for peace in the region.
Moratinos told reporters at a news conference afterwards that "talks between Prime Minister Olmert and President Mahmoud Abbas has been extremely important".
"Our responsibility is to encourage them to find the courage and final decision to make this comprehensive and final agreement," he said.
Spain prides itself on having a special relationship with Mideast countries and has tried to get the EU to make
greater efforts toward peace in the region in recent years.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have been holding regular meetings designed to move ahead peace negotiations they began at a US-sponsored peace conference in Annapolis late last year.
But with little progress apparent, their stated goal of striking a deal by the end of 2008 appears unattainable.
