Subsurface Constructors installed 400 aggregate piers inside an existing warehouse on Long Island, NY that is being converted to a two story storage facility. Subsurface used their innovative flot-system on a rig set up for working inside a building with a height restrictions varying between 16 and 20 feet. Aggregate piers were installed to a depth of 10 to 13 feet to improve and reinforce the 10 to 13 feet of loose fills and soft silts. This approach provided the project with significant cost savings from over-excavation of 10 to 13 feet below the existing building or pile foundations.

Aggregate piers or stone columns are often the most cost-effective option when also considering remove-and-replace or deep foundations. The installation process is fast, often resulting in 40 to 60 piers installed per shift. Typical bearing pressures using aggregate piers are in the range of 4,000 pounds per square foot (psf) to 6,000 psf, but could be higher depending on the proportions of the existing soil.
