Whenever you receive a message in WhatsApp application then you will see a number at the top of the application icon that will tell you how many messages are received which are unread until now. But if you don't see this kind of notifications then what you do is go to "settings". Go to Apps. Scroll down and look for WhatsApp application. Open the application. Go to "Notifications". Make sure that the first thing is "show notifications", it is enabled and the other important thing that you have to enable is "App icon badges". This should be enabled. Even if the rest of the options are enabled but App icon badges if it is not enabled then you will not be able to see how many chats you have received in WhatsApp application.
