ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - The world's largest lottery jackpot -- a staggering $1.6 billion -- is up for grabs Tuesday night.
After 24 drawings with no winner, Mega Millions may have to change its name to Mega Billions. Local 12 visited the AmeriStop in Anderson Township where hopeful customers are buying their tickets.
At this AmeriStop, Mega Millions is literally off the charts. The normal charts only go to $999 million.
The current $1.6-billion prize had to be posted by hand. It's an amount that draws lots of people who do not normally take a $2 chance on any game of chance.
"My husband just text me to remind me. I never play. I work right down the street, so running to get lunch, I thought I'd get some tickets," said Angie Cummins of Bethel.
The jackpot would be a record lottery payout. There's also a $620 million Powerball Wednesday, which is also nothing to sneeze at. Still, it's Mega Millions that is the mega draw.
If you take the cash payout, that $1.6 billion will shrink. According to the site Mega USA, state and federal taxes leave you in the $600 million range, which is still pretty impressive.
Even though your odds of winning are slim, Ohio does pretty well. It's the fourth number of jackpot winners out of all 44 states involved in Mega Millions.
