Throbbing Gristle played their last show during their original incarnation on May 29, 1981 at the Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco, CA, USA. The band broke up shortly thereafter, due to Genesis and Cosey breaking up their romantic relationship, Cosey and Chris becoming official, the fact that all four members were concerned about and dismissive of their burgeoning popularity, and Genesis and Peter's forthcoming project which would later be known as Psychic TV. Rumors of a reunion began as early as 2002, as Chris and Cosey, ever the custodians of TG, began mastering all of their original live shows for the TG24 boxset.
According to Cosey in her book Art Sex Music, all four of them reunited over dinner in 2003. Genesis was accompanied by his then lover Lady Jaye. Peter began the dinner by laying down the law, telling Gen that all the personal conflicts of the prior 20 years had not been forgotten and that they weren't all suddenly friends again. Gen looked away and said that all of them have their own ideas of what happened. Peter raised his eyebrows and frowned, but didn't challenge them, as Cosey and Chris tried to resolve any tension. Ultimately, TG jammed in Mute Studios shortly thereafter, writing the material which would become TG Now. Over the next few months, Mute slowly unveiled plans for a proper TG reunion.
The original show date, announced as early as July 18, 2003, was supposed to be May 14-16 as a part of a huge event at Pontin’s Camber Sands Holiday Resort in Camber, East Sussex, England, but was cancelled on April 26. While severely disappointed at the lack of professional handling of the situation, TG decided to play anyway at the Astoria Theatre, billing the show as a “live recording session.” As Genesis P-Orridge opened the show with, it was the first time in almost 23 years to the day the four members had played live together, though in the months prior they had started collaborating in the studio together. Numerous TG and Coil affiliates attended the show, including Claus Laufenburg, Thighpaulsandra, Pierce Wyss, and Massimo Villani.
The official video of the gig, released on TGV, prominently shows John Balance garbed in a black-and-white striped shirt and pants. According to Thighpaulsandra, he was drunk at the time. John frequently danced and shook himself to the music, but the most notable moment came during “Almost a Kiss,” when he ran up on the stage and kissed Peter on the cheek. A few shots later reveal Peter was quite bemused by the moment. It’s very sad, but telling. Certainly from “RE~TG” on, the Coil story grew a whole lot more melancholic.
TG played all four songs from TG Now here, as well as evolved versions of a few beloved classics from their back catalogue. They developed "X-Ray" into the more advanced and technical "Live Ray." "Vatican (Sorry Nicholas)" is only present here and during the Mute Studios jam sessions, included on TGV. "Persuasion" gained a new bassline. "Army of Something" was only played here and at the X-TG shows in 2010. This version of "Discipline" most closely resembles "Don't Do As You're Told, Do As You Think," as opposed to the original form of the song.
