The black francolin is a pheasant and was formerly known as the Black Partridge (locally known as काला तीतर).
During the breeding season (March to May), the call of the black francolin can be heard in the mornings and evenings and sometimes, almost all day. The male calls standing on an earth mound, bund, rock, or a low tree branch and is soon joined by other birds answering from all directions.
