"The concerto begins with a melancholy primary theme in D Minor, establishing a somewhat dark quality. Unlike in Classical-era concerti, the piano joins the orchestra near the very beginning of the concerto. This understated primary theme is quickly passed to the strings, while the piano delivers rapid accompanimental figures, suggesting the great virtuosity to come. The most brilliant section of the opening movement appears in the extended piano cadenza, near the end of the movement. A brief closing section, which restates the primary theme, brings the movement to a close. The woodwinds lead off the slow Intermezzo movement, introducing a theme of great expressive depth. Upon the entrance of the piano, an improvisatory character is embraced, perhaps reminiscent of certain works by Chopin or Liszt. A section in triple meter features a restless quality, while a virtuosic concluding piano figure leads directly to the final movement without pause. The Finale opens vigorously, featuring impressive technical figures in the piano. However, the movement frequently reintroduces thematic material (or derivatives of thematic material) from previous movements—a technique knows as cyclicism. As a result, there are moments of quiet reflection interspersed with bouts of spectacular virtuosity, reinforced with liberal and heroic use of the orchestra. The concerto closes with a Presto section that can be described as nothing less than electrifying."
