An initiative of the ADB and the Philippines DOTr, the Ortigas Greenways (designed by PGAA Creative Design - Urban Designers and Landscape Architects) will provide adequate, safe, comfortable, PWD-friendly, weather-protected pedestrian links from the EDSA MRT to Guadix/Poveda/Robinsons/Ortigas Ave to the north and SM Megamall/ADB Avenue/Opal/F Ortigas Jr/Onyx/Meralco Avenue to the east. These links address the current tight at-grade pedestrian sidewalks and conflicts between pedestrian and vehicular traffic at key intersections. Traffic studies connected with this project showed that Onyx and Opal roads are much wider than the traffic they carry and this allowed conversion of part of the roadway into a linear greenway providing open green space and pedestrian connectivity perpendicular to F Ortigas Jr. The Ortigas Greenways will allow anyone coming to the CBD to cut 10-25 minutes in their journeys from EDSA to sections of the business center (which today require long circuitous walks or FX/bus rides). There will be a bike hub with racks, toilets and showers incorporated with the Greenways to encourage bike use. The greenways (even the elevated portions) will allow commuters to walk with their bikes across each section). Lighting, maintenance and security will be provided by Pasig City and the local CBD association. Additional lighting, maintenance and security will be shared by businesses running the controlled number of Al Fresco Cafes on Onyx and Opal sections. Construction is targeted to be started in the second half of the year with completion before the middle of 2018.
