Programme notes:
Alexander Arutiunian (1920-2012) was a 20th-century Soviet-Armenian composer who was influential in the world of Soviet composition and teaching. Renowned for his fusion of Armenian folk elements with contemporary compositions, Arutiunian's oeuvre exemplified his creativity and deep reverence for traditional music. Arno Babadjanian (1921-1983), a close friend of Arutiunian, shared his compatriot's passion for blending traditional Armenian influences with modern musical language. Babadjanian's music often resonates with poignant lyricism, combining complex harmonies with folk-inspired melodies. A recipient of numerous awards, including the Stalin Prize, Babadjanian's impact on Armenian music is immeasurable. In 1950, both composers collaborated to compose Armenian Rhapsody, a work of national power, strength and virtuosity. Interestingly, the composers collaborated by writing separate parts - Barbadjanian wrote the part of the first piano, while Arutuinian wrote the second.
The piece was the first work of such national grandeur in the Armenian repertoire and was immediately celebrated due to its brilliant style. It features a fusion of the Russian musical influence of the time and aspects of Armenian music, notably, their characteristic modes and songs. Played in two movements, Andante and Allegro, the piece opens with a slow, lyrical expansion based on an Armenian folk song. The second piano begins, with a typical rhythmic Armenian dance accompaniment, adopting a ballad-like quality, while the first piano accompanies with a soft dance melody. Despite the movement’s calm opening, it retains a rhythmic, dance-like momentum, where singing moments are juxtaposed with an undercurrent of virtuosic urgency, eventually culminating to a triumphant, chordal climax. With modal changes that lead into a minor key, the dance-like movement continues with a call and response from both pianos as the movement comes to a gradual close. Suddenly, the second movement, Allegro, begins. A dynamic crescendo (getting louder) and rhythmic flourish opens the piece energetically. The lightness and fervent, insistent rhythmic pressure creates an upbeat, lively atmosphere. As the piece draws to an end, both pianos accelerate and intensify in volume, gaining momentum before eventually culminating in a pair of dramatic and thrilling glissandos, thus bringing the piece to a powerful and compelling close.
