Canada’s Prime Minister for the last nine years, Justin Trudeau, has just resigned amidst rising discontent in Canada.
In a press conference on Jan. 6, he announced that he will step down once his party selects a new leader, and said that the search for a new Liberal leader is already underway.
The decision to step down comes at a pivotal moment in Canada as incoming US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico until the countries stop the flow of migrants and drugs into the United States.
“As you all know, I am a fighter, and I am not someone who backs away from a fight, particularly when a fight is as important as this one is,” Trudeau said as he announced he would be stepping down. “But I have always been driven by my love for Canada, by my desire to serve Canadians and by what is in the best interest of Canadians and Canadians deserve a real choice in the next election. And it has become obvious to me — with the internal battles — that I cannot be the one to carry the Liberal standard into the next election.”
