13 years of Tory destruction of the hospitality industry has led to the acceleration of closures of 2 Pubs a day disappearing from the cities, towns and villages at an alarming rate…
For too long we have seen the destruction of the community pub and the culture that it supports. Norwich for instance was known for its 360 pubs one for every day of the year… It was 600 in 1884 but today 130 have survived the neck hold of business rates, inflation and increased alcohol duty frightening of pub goers to take refuge in Tescos boose isles and white lightning cider in brown paper bags… 7 pubs have already closed just this year in Norfolk and more are on the Brink but this picture I paint is not confined to my home city but the trend is sweeping across England… If they are not being burnt and bulldozed they are not viable in the current economic climate and being sold off for conversion into student accommodation and the occasional illicit Brothel… Nearly 400 pubs closed their doors for good in England and Wales in the first half of 2023, almost as many as the whole of 2022… Campaigners have called for planning laws to change to protect pubs but that won't happen…
With energy costs up 80% year-on-year, in a low-growth, high-inflation and high-interest rates environment… and after Sunak's lunatic Alcohol budget… breweries are lowering alcohol to benefit from a lower alcohol duty on beer… Foster’s, for instance, cut its alcohol content this year from four per cent to 3.7 per cent ABV from 4 per cent.
A government-enforced Shrinkflation same beer less alcohol… less of a PM with shorter trousers and bigger boots… Unfortunately the loss of community spaces such as pubs that hold communities together we will just see more discontent and bitterness in the British people… Is that Rishi Sunak the inaction man's 'Long Term Decision' or has his almost billionaire wife got shares in that infamous White Lightning Cider? Just putting it out there
