If your medical condition has improved or if the medical evidence in your file does not support a claim for on-going disability you can agree to change your disability application to ask for a closed period of disability.
As long as you have met SSA's definition of disability (unable to perform duties of simple, entry-level work) for a period of at least 12 consecutive months, you can ask for a closed period. As I point out in this video, I find that disability judges are often receptive to closed period arguments because it shows you are only asking for benefits to the extent that the evidence supports your claim. Further, if you have gone back to work, your request for benefits for the months you could not work will be seen as more believable.
