It shows the UK’s new and highly secretive weapon, the dragonfire laser. The weapons main use case is taking down drones, drone swarms and enemy missiles. Replacing or aiding existing defence systems such as the close in weapons system.
The first clip shows it destroying a civilian type drone such as a DJI in a controlled indoor setting. These may seem harmless but Ukraine has shown how these can be used to deadly effect.
But, the next clip is more impressive, it’s from a recent test of the laser on a series of targets including a banshee target drone.
However, on top of the declassified footage, the MOD also released animated footage of how the laser will next be tested and used. It will be attached to royal navy vessels and used to take down enemy drones and small ships. Either blowing them out the sky or tactically taking down specific systems on the vehicles.
