EXTREMELY NECESSARY UPDATE:
When I uploaded this video as a freshman at LMU, I had no idea what my college experience would turn out to be (even just a semester later) and just how neglectful and abusive I would discover an institution that prides itself on its wealth of knowledge, and commitment to social justice to turn out to be. From being denied disability services , financial aid, emergency funding (due to being a low income student) to the permeation of racism in the social spaces and classroom settings, LMU is simply and fore-mostly not a space for low-income students.
I feel like it’s my responsibility to say blatantly: PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY if you are; a student of color, from a low income family (or in any capacity require aid to attend tbh) or simply don’t wish to be actively oppressed by an instition that not only doesn’t care about its poor/low income/unhoused students, and does things like locking them out of their dorms during the middle of a school week, raising tuition prices during a pandemic and subsequently purchasing a nearly $6 million dollar home for the school’s President and describing a hate crime on campus as a “racial incident” .
I plan on finishing up my time at LMU very soon (thankfully) and will be making a video further discussing mine, and other students of color’s experiences of being neglected and ostracized by our University’s operations during one of the difficult periods in recent history for POC and members of the working class. I really cannot stress enough that I have struggled with the immense guilt of having this video be one of my most well-performing and even interacting in person with people who have shared that my video helped inform and inspire them to attend LMU, knowing the reality of the school’s treatment of people from similar circumstances as I am.
This school not only does not care about mental health for its students of color, but they take an active role in the harm that affects their students and ignoring the problem has such greater risks than just letting it to happen, a lot of students cannot afford to self-advocate and are not even given access to the resources to be able to do so.
LMU does not just neglect, but the structure of the institution actively and inherently benefits students who come from wealth, while putting the very students they are harming on the frontlines in places like the Housing Office (often work study employees) to avoid real accountability and ultimately cause even more harm to their students’ wellbeing (by giving them a fake sense of responsibility over the institution’s own deliberate actions).
I hope that my warning will at least inform any student out there who can be prevented from experiencing even half of the oppression that helps fuel this university. At the very least, please consider what this University does to its poorest and students most in need as a reflection of their true values.
Thank you and I hope to be back soon with my follow-up video.
