Sam Tompkins back to his roots! Busking in Brighton Ship Street. Thanks Sam, it was a a privilege to watch and have you in our BBB channel (finally : ) !
Sam Tompkins started his career through busking on the streets of Brighton, "at the age of 16, for pocket money. "I went to a skate shop in Brighton and I saw this hat and I couldn't afford it," he said. "One of my mates suggested that I went and busked for it, because they knew I could sing." He did - and he made the money to buy the hat "very quickly". Sam started busking every weekend, and it wasn't long before he started doing gigs too. But it wasn't always easy money.
He remembers once being booed off stage by people he'd grown up with in his hometown of Eastbourne, where he was opening as support act. "It was brutal," he says. "I came off and I remember that it was sort of a make or break situation for me." (BBC)
When he gained more fame, he started performing in concerts and later sold out shows touring around the UK. He has released music on Spotify since 2017 and on other platforms as well. Tompkins is actively releasing music videos on his YouTube account, new songs as well as doing tours in Europe & Worldwide.
His vivid storytelling has brought him the attention of some of the world’s biggest music stars including Elton John, Bastille, Bebe Rehxa, Ty Dolla $ign, and Justin Bieber. The latter has been a prominent supporter of Tompkins, with Bieber giving him a co-sign early in his career. “I watch your videos man, and you’re just so talented,” the US superstar told him. “You bring so much joy to people, your voice is so good. Keep going, keep singing because you’re already making such an impact. That’s what’s so beautiful.”
Sam's released EPs and singles have brought in millions of streams by listeners, and gone on sold-out tours. With big plans for new music and tours, Sam's not got plans to go back on the streets of Brighton much. "It's important to know that people make a living off busking," he says. "I don't want anyone to feel like I'm taking food away from their mouths, so I wouldn't do it too often. But I do it every now and then for fun." (BBC)
