Michelangelo Amerighi da Caravaggio was a leading figure in the development of the Baroque painting style. Born and raised in Italy, he painted religious and mythical motifs in a naturalistic way – but with a sense of drama and expression like no painter before him. By manipulating light and shadows with the use of chiaroscuro, Caravaggio painted and captured man and life at the most dramatic moments . When you are faced with a Caravaggio painting, it is as if walking in on a historical moment in time, as people, scenes and animals seem to come to life through the dynamic and expressive style. Known for his temper and vivid personality, which come to life in his art, Caravaggio found himself in trouble more than often throughout his life. After getting into a fight in 1606, he ended up killing Ranuccio Tomassoni and had to flee Rome to avoid death penalty.
