Counter-protesters claimed they had “scared off” far-right extremists after taking to the streets in their thousands on Wednesday night.
Police had prepared for the worst after thugs threatened violent protests outside the offices of law centres providing advice to immigrants. However, they were far outnumbered by anti-racism demonstrators.
Thousands of counter-demonstrators gathered in Walthamstow, east London, ahead of a planned protest, with groups chanting “Whose streets? Our streets!” and “Free Palestine”.
About 500 anti-fascist demonstrators gathered on Glossop Road in Sheffield but there was no sign of anti-immigration agitators. There were 50 anti-immigrant demonstrators in Southampton but they were outnumbered by 200 anti-racism campaigners.
