What is Bhut Jolokia? What makes it so unique?
Bhut Jolokia or the Bhutan pepper is the spiciest pepper all over the world. The ghost pepper originates from North East India and is a major part of the Naga and Assamese cuisine. Bhut means ghost in Assamese and hence the name ‘ghost pepper.’ Be it in curries, chutneys or pickles, Assamese thali is incomplete without the use of bhut jolokia. Although there are many varieties like, peach ghost pepper, yellow ghost pepper, chocolate ghost pepper and purple ghost pepper, out of all these options the red bhut jolokia is the most popular one.
How hot is Bhut Jolokia exactly?
Guinness Book of World Records announced ghost pepper as the world’s hottest pepper in the year 2007. If you find jalapenos hot, then you’ll be shocked to know that the hottest ghost pepper is 416 times spicier than a regular jalapeno pepper. This pepper gives a sweet deceiving taste in the beginning but then the heat hits your taste buds after 40-50 seconds, leaving you gasping for breath and craving for something sweet. One starts to sweat severely and this feeling persists for the next 30-40 minutes. These peppers are so hot that one needs to be extremely careful while handling bhut jolokia. Wear gloves or else it might create burning sensations.
