Description: What a literary genius William Blake was! While his 'Chimney Sweeper' described the horrific conditions of very young boys being forced into labour in the 18th century, it offered hope that God would come to their rescue. 'A Little Black Thing Among The Snow' destroys this fantasy as the chimney sweeper realises that all is a facade and the church is a place where all guilty seek ( and find ) acquittal for their wrongs. The intense suffering of the chimney sweeper continues even as he learns that the Church is a medium, forgiving those responsible for tearing his childhood away from him and rendering him hopeless and in 'woe' The perpetrators of the crime live on with a clear conscience while the victims to their horror realise that they have no one to turn to. The imagery in this poem is stark and brutal in keeping with the soul of the poem.
Full Poem:
A little black thing among the snow,
Crying "weep! 'weep!" in notes of woe!
"Where are thy father and mother? say?"
"They are both gone up to the church to pray.
Because I was happy upon the heath,
And smil'd among the winter's snow,
They clothed me in the clothes of death,
And taught me to sing the notes of woe.
And because I am happy and dance and sing,
They think they have done me no injury,
And are gone to praise God and his Priest and King,
Who make up a heaven of our misery."
