The Pancha Rathas, Mahabalipuram

Also known as Pandava Rathas
Is a symbol of architectural and creative brilliance
The entire complex is carved out of a single stone.
This is similiar to Kailasa temple and Ellora temple.
Pancha rathas was built by
King Narasimhavarman 1. Between 630 and 668 CE.
Vimanas of these Rathas are ekathala to
Trithala.
Dharma Raja Ratha
Is the tallest with three storied Vimana
It is built with a square layout. The corners of the sanctum are adorned with several sculptures
The first floor is ornate with 22 carvings
The second floor contains rich carvings of several figures
The Bheema Ratha
with an Ekathala Vimana
There are rectangular planes and with lion mounted columns (four columns) galleries on both long sides
Arjuna Ratha with two step Vimana shares the same secondary platform with the Draupadi Ratha.The three sides consist of figures of several deities
Lord Shiva’s mount, Nandi is housed on the rear of the ratha.
The entrance of the ratha rests on two lion mounted carved pilasters.
The Nakula Sahadeva Ratha
It is built to a simple plan with no embellishing carvings in its apses
As the structure looks like backside of an elephant, it is referred as ‘gajapristha’. Style
The Draupadi Ratha is a monument in the complex
It is a square structure, which resembles a village hut.
The doorway faces west and has dwarapalikas on either side.
inside this sanctum portrays Goddess Durga standing on a lotus .
There is also an independent monolithic stone sculpture of Nandi adjoining the ratha in the open space.
UNESCO has marked this place as World Heritage Site.
