Chief Scientist, Carl Nelson, changes a copper penny into "Gold". The penny was boiled in a solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) with zinc (Zn) metal. The zinc metal dissolves to form an ion that reacts with the copper on the suface of the penny. At this point the penny now looks silver in color. When heated in the flame of the torch, the surface layer of zinc and a bit of the copper form a copper rich brass alloy. The penny now looks "golden".
