Metra spokesperson Michael Gillis says Metra Electric Line has been cancelled until further notice. That is the line that runs from Millennium Station down to University Park. It has branches that go to Blue Island to South Chicago.
Track inspectors, signal and switch maintainers tried to keep up with these freezing temperatures, by working 12-hour shifts to try to resolve problems as quickly as possible. Gillis says it’s extremely dangerous to try to keep up with the electric tracks and it’s better off to keep these trains inactive for now.
Typically, Metra Electric Line transports about 10,000 passenger trips a day.
