The Nile is the main water source for Egypt, Sudan, and South Sudan. The river is made up of two tributaries: the White Nile and the Blue Nile. The White Nile is longer and starts at Lake Victoria in Tanzania, while the Blue Nile starts near Lake Tana in Ethiopia. The Nile empties into the Mediterranean Sea in northern Egypt.
In the early to mid-1900s, Egypt and Sudan signed agreements that gave them a lot of rights over the river's use. However, some countries further upstream have argued that the treaties gave Egypt unfair control.
The Nile River's basin spans across the countries of Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania.
