STORYLINE:
Dozens of bodies were buried Tuesday in a mass grave in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip.
At the Kerem Shalom border crossing between Gaza, Israel, and Egypt, U.N. and Gaza medical workers received a truck with dozens of bodies in blue bodybags loaded in the container.
The bodies were held by Israeli forces in northern Gaza in their ongoing ground incursion into the besieged Palestinian enclave, and were transferred back to the local authorities for their burial.
Palestinian authorities were told that there were some 80 bodies loaded in the truck, but when medical workers went inside to look further, they quickly left after opening some of the bodybags, as medical workers found the odors unbearable.
“Some of the remains and bodies have decomposed, so we cannot open this container in a neighborhood where people live,” Dr. Marwan al-Hams, Health Emergency Committee Director in Rafah told The Associated Press, fearing that illnesses could be spread among residents.
Israel’s offensive is one of the most devastating military campaigns in recent history. More than 20,900 Palestinians, two-thirds of them women and children, have been killed, according to the Health Ministry in Gaza, whose count doesn't differentiate between civilians and combatants. On Tuesday afternoon, it said 240 people had been killed over the past 24 hours.
Israel vowed to eliminate Hamas’ capabilities in Gaza after the Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took about 240 others hostage. Israel aims to free the more than 100 hostages who remain in captivity.
