When the US Navy closed its Mare Island Shipyard in 1996, the neighboring city of Vallejo began a steep downward slide into bankruptcy. In 2011, a different kind of operation moved in and used the facilities, not to build ships, but to scrap them. I expected to shoot a story about how to dismantle a large ship. Then, I met one of the local workman, and the story took on an added, more personal dimension.
