For clarification: 🚨 when we refer to speed training we’re talking about drills that will move the needle (ie. sprints w/ full rest, multidirectional speed, etc) exercises that force the athlete to create HIGH FORCES. Doing footwork in place DOES NOT do this.
Now am I saying footwork training is useless or there isn’t a time and place for this? Absolutely not.
When it comes to assessing what an athlete or team needs we look at what they are getting plenty of and what they are not being exposed to enough. Context is always key. 🔑
If we have one hour I’m not going to waste it doing 20min of ladder or footwork. In many youth clubs or with skill trainers, players are exposed to this enough so again as a performance coach we need to look at what they are NOT getting enough of and prescribe what they NEED.
