You know caulks and sealants can be a sticky proposition, but here are a few tips for you that'll take the mess out of this job and give you results that are as smooth as a pro.
Messy caulk joints can be caused by putting down too much material in the first place. When trying to smooth the joint excess sealant oozes out of the surrounding surface. Cleaning it off takes time and often leaves ridges and ragged edges. On the other hand, a caulk joint like this is easy to get, if you keep a few tips in mind.
Now caulks and sealants, especially silicone, work better at room temperature. So if yours is stored in the garage or basement, bring it inside the night before, let it warm up, it will bond better and smooth more easily.
Cut the caulk tube nozzle at an angle close to the tip. A smaller opening helps avoid overfilling the joint. Many caulking guns have a built in tool to pierce the seal at the base of the nozzle. Choose a high quality, no drip gun with a smooth trigger action. One of the things that I like to do to make sure that I've cut the nozzle to the best size is to do a little test. For a test piece, I usually just take a couple of boards together at right angles.
Before applying sealant around a tub or sink, clean the surface first with denatured alcohol. Hold the caulking gun at a 45 degree angle and pull it along the joint. Lift it away quickly at the end of a pass.
Now, the real secret to getting a professional looking smooth joint is something called tooling. That's where you take your finger and draw it over the caulk you've just put down. Now in the past that's been a very messy job, but there's a new product on the market that makes this go a lot smoother. Let me show you how.
This product called Caulk-Mate, lubricates the surface allowing me to apply enough pressure to push the caulk fully into the joint for a good seal, at the same time the solution prevents any excess sealant from sticking to the surface or my skin. One wipe and my finger is as clean as a whistle.
Well, it's best if you can let silicone caulk sit overnight before using it. Well here's the bottom line, if you've got the right technique and the right solution, you can get professional looking caulking results and that means you can tackle those caulking jobs that you may have been putting off.
