In the frozen northern reaches of Canada, the Ontario Northland Railway is a vital lifeline for off grid communities and far flung towns. It’s home to one of the northernmost regular passenger train services, and one of the last people can flag down to stop; the Polar Bear Express.
In this episode, Locomotive Engineers, Jerry and Sheldon try to get passengers through the brutal wilderness, from Cochrane, six hours up to the last stop on the line; the town of Moosonee. Onboard the train is a group of adventurers, who hope to trek with the Moose Cree First Nation. But this journey may be more adventure than they bargained for… A major storm is predicted.
But before the Polar Bear Express even leaves Cochrane, the trip is almost thwarted by a loss of oil pressure on the loco. Once fixed and on route, we meet Chris the Snowfighter Driver, desperately trying to clear the deep snow from the line to allow the train to pass. But a hydraulic leak puts his snow busting beast out of action and the race is on to find the fault and get the machine back out on track before the storm leaves the train stranded.
Elsewhere on the line, the extreme temperatures have caused the earth beneath the track to rise and buckle, which could derail the train. So Maintenance Foreman Rich and his crew rush to even out the humps and dips in the track, before the train arrives on the scene…
