TRS Party Win 4 MLC Seats | Telangana Legislative Council | CM KCR | AIMIM | YOYO TV Channel
Four candidates of the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and one from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) were elected in the biennial elections to fill five vacancies in the Telangana Legislative Council from the MLAs quota on Tuesday. The four candidates of the TRS include Home Minister Mohd Mehmood Ali, who was seeking re-election. The Congress had nominated Gudur Narayana Reddy but later decided to boycott the election, alleging that TRS was "adopting unfair means and illegal means."
The three other candidates of TRS that got elected are S Subhash Reddy, Satyavathi Rathod and Yegge Mallesham. AIMIM's sole candidate Mirza Riyaj Ul Hassan had the support of the TRS and was expected to win.
In the 119-member assembly, TRS with the support of two MLAs, one independent and one from All India Forward Bloc, has a strength of 90 MLAs. Its ally AIMIM also has seven MLAs and thus the nominated candidates of the ruling block were expected to get elected.
The polls started after speaker P Srinivas Reddy exercised his franchise, the voting continued till 4 PM and the counting of votes had begun immediately. The Council has 40 members out of which 14 members are elected under MLAs' quota.
Earlier, four of the Congress' 19 MLAs jumped ship to join the ruling TRS reducing the grand old party's tally to 15. After boycotting the MLC polls, Congress' candidate Narayana Reddy had said that the polls were "undemocratic, anti-constitutional and illegal." In the 2018 assembly polls, TRS had won a landslide victory, while the TDP and Congress combine could only manage 20 seats.
