This is a long chat, friend, but I wanted to give you a big picture overview of who I am and what I am trying to do in sharing some of my own dance love, and journey with you.
This series is aimed at two groups, really.
The first is dancers of any flavor of salsa. My personal favorite music/style of salsa to dance to is timba (And if you watch any dancers on IG for example, increasingly I see videos of mambo shines and on2 footwork classes dancing TO TIMBA so I'm not alone in this preference regardless of dance style!), but this background and the clave listening/feeling practice drill I will teach you in the series this introduces applies to any salsa dancer because the flavor and musicality of ANY salsa dancer will be enhanced by a connection with the clave.
It is also dedicated to the lovely people in my exercise classes with whom I sometimes share some dance warm ups and who may actually wish to explore dancing to salsa in their own homes, and enjoy the benefits of being able to connect with the music more fully, and to help them understand what I am clapping to, and why I may have them step on different timings to help warm up their feet and bodies, but also their brains and nervous systems :)
There are countless YT videos on the clave rhythm, so definitely have a listen to someone playing it, ideally using the clave instrument itself, so you can appreciate its gorgeous, crisp, clear sound by someone playing it well, and not just me clapping it. I have a real respect for this music and the perfection of the craft, and so whereas I am presenting an intro geared towards people who want to develop dance feel, I do not pretend to have the ability to play these sounds the way they are meant to sound.
Thank you for watching. I hope this helps you in your dance journey!
