Join us on this episode as we see a chicken bus, get car sick, and watch jugglers at intersections on our way to climb one of the most active volcanoes in Central America, Volcán de Pacaya!
This was probably one of the most incredible adventures and hikes of my life! It took our family of seven about 90 minutes to climb Pacaya. We did not reach the top, however this is the normal path to our guides will take people.
We were above the clouds and I couldn't believe when we stepped over an area where you could tell the lava rock was a different color, it went from roughly 70° f to 80° f because of the active lava flowing beneath us. Thankfully our guy brought some marshmallows and sticks and we were able to roast marshmallows on certain areas of the lava rocks.
Volcán de Pacaya is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America. Although we didn't see any lava or hear any explosions, our guide told us earlier that morning there were some small eruptions happening. And in the evenings it's very common to see lava flow as the sun goes down.
Highly recommend this hike, you will be swarmed by little kids trying to sell walking sticks when you park in the parking lot. And the older kids will have horses and mules for rent. walking sticks were about $1 and horses were about $20 although everything is negotiable.
