🦊 In this GCSE Biology video, we explain that protein excretion maintains nitrogen balance by comparing nitrogen intake from proteins with nitrogen excretion. Proteins are broken down into amino acids, which the body can't store and must excrete. Since amino acids are too large to be filtered by the kidneys, they are deaminated in the liver, converting them into ammonia and then into non-toxic urea. Urea is then safely excreted in urine, helping to regulate the body's nitrogen levels.
