Here it is again, New Tool Tuesday. Today I am working with the new Mate 1 and Mega Mate tools from Jimmy Clewes Woodturning. As some of you will remember I took a class with Jimmy a couple of weeks ago and made the flask during his class. While turning the inside of the flask Jimmy broke out his Mate 1 tool for the class to try. I was the first in the class to get to the hollowing stage so Jimmy hands me the tool and says give it go.
I have been hollowing out vessels and bowls for over a decade now and was pretty sure I had seen it all. Well let me tell you this is one awesome tool. It cuts clean and is very easy to control. As it always happens to me when I play with a new tool I just had to buy one and bring it back to the shop. And as amazing as the Mate 1 is the Mega Mate is a beast of a tool. I was more then 6” over the tool rest while cutting and still had plenty of control.
