After failing to nominate a new candidate for the President of the European Commission on 21 June 2019, the European Council met again this week in hopes of reaching compromise. On Monday 1 July 2019, the EPP almost reached an agreement to nominate Frans Timmerman (opposed to their candidate, Manfred Weber), but it was shot down by EPP members who believe Weber should head the Commission. Talks will continue throughout the week, as Tusk called for the council to reconvene at 13:00 on 2 July 2019.
