There’s now a mini museum in the middle of Wellington Place... built inside the only remaining part of Leeds Central Station! 🚂
Dating all the way back to the 1850s, the wagon lifting tower was used at the old station to lift train wagons from the higher level passenger line down to the Great Northern Goods Yard - using steam power and large chains ⛓️ 😲
This wagon hoist has stood the test of time as it’s the last remaining building from Leeds Central Station, which closed in 1967 with all services moved to Leeds City Station 🚉
The tower has undergone a huge £1.5 million restoration and now inside you’ll find a new mini museum containing snippets of Leeds’ railway history. There’s the original sign that showed passengers the way out from Central Station to City Station and the Queen’s Hotel - plus the last ticket for the final train leaving the station before its closure 🎟️
This little slice of history is free and open 7 days a week at Wellington Place 🤩
