The Maung Hsaing is a traditional Burmese musical instrument, consisting of a square frame that holds a set of bossed, suspended bronze gongs. Typically featuring around 18 gongs, the Maung Hsaing is tuned to a lower register than the Kyi Waing. The gongs are hung by strings, and musicians play them with mallets similar to those used for the Kyi Waing, striking the gongs to produce a rich, mellow tone.
While not always present in all ensembles—especially in the Nat Hsaing, where it's not deemed essential—the Maung Hsaing usually accompanies the Kyi Waing in performances. Both instruments play fast, intricate, and ornamented melodies together. However, the Maung Hsaing tends to repeat the Kyi Waing’s melodies with subtle variations, contributing depth and resonance to the overall sound. Positioned alongside the Kyi Waing and to the right of the drum circle, it adds a melodic layer to the ensemble’s performance.
