Central Texas is famous for beautiful Live Oak Trees. People will actually pay more for a house that has beautiful trees, but do you really know the Quercus Virginiana? Is it an evergreen or is it deciduous? Well, kind of both (not really). They are sometimes referred to as evergreen oaks but they are truly NOT evergreen. In early Spring they will drop their leaves as the new leaves emerge. This is normal and not a sign of disease. They don’t drop their leaves in the Fall like so many other oaks. They have been called semi-deciduous because they do drop leaves, but they also always have leaves. So what does this mean? If you do not have live oaks on your property then you don’t have anything to be concerned about. If you do, you may expect a frustrating few weeks in Spring. Typically starting in early March, the tree will begin dropping its leaves. It can get very messy and you may find yourself raking leaves constantly. To add insult to injury, once the leaves are finally done falling, the oak will drop very messy pollen tassels AND allergies will be miserable. So, just like your crazy uncle you’re forced to spend time with over the holidays, love the tree and put up with a bit of a mess.
