WHAT IS CHICKENPOX:
Chickenpox is a highly contagious infection, which means it spreads easily from person to person. If you’ve not had chickenpox before and someone in your household gets it, it’s very likely you’ll catch it too.
Chickenpox is a common infection caused by the varicella zoster virus. It causes an itchy, spotty rash. The spots start flat then become raised and blistered, before crusting over. For most people, chickenpox isn’t serious. You’ll probably feel better after a week or so.
You can catch chickenpox at any time of year, but it’s most likely in spring. It’s most common in children under 10, but you can catch it at any age. Once you have had chickenpox, you’re very unlikely to catch it again. About nine out of 10 adults are immune as a result of catching chickenpox when they were a child.
If you’ve had chickenpox, the varicella zoster virus will stay dormant in your body for the rest of your life. At any time later in life, the virus could be reactivated, causing shingles.
SYMPTOMS OF CHICKENPOX:
1. Chickenpox starts with red spots. They can appear anywhere on the body.
2. The spots fill with fluid. The blisters may burst. They might spread or stay in a small area.
3. The spots scab over. More blisters might appear while others scab over.
Other symptoms:
You might get symptoms before or after the spots, including:
• A high temperature above 38C
• Aches and pains, and generally feeling unwell
• Loss of appetite
Chickenpox is very itchy and can make children feel miserable, even if they don't have many spots. Chickenpox is usually much worse in adults.
Chickenpox treatment at home
1.) Have you or your child stay at home and limit exposure to others. Chickenpox is most infectious from 2 days before the spots appear to until they have crusted over, usually 5 days after they first appeared.
2.) Soak inside a colloidal oatmeal bath: you can get colloidal oatmeal at your local pharmacy. Add the oatmeal under the faucet while the tub is filling with lukewarm water. Make sure its not hot water. The Colloidal oats can moisturize skin as well as act as an emollient to improve dry skin. They also have high levels of starch to work to soothe and protect the skin.
3.) A baking soda bath. To do this, Add one cup of baking soda to a shallow, lukewarm bath and let you or your child Soak in it for 15 to 20 minutes.
4.) After the bath: apply some calamine lotion, vaseline, or another fragrance free anti-itch lotion. Calamine lotion contains skin-soothing properties like zinc oxide, which have helped others. Lastly, If none of these help, ask your doctor if over the counter antihistamines such as benadryl is okay to take for the itching.
5.) If you or your child has any pain or fever, use non-aspirin medications, such as acetaminophen. You want to Avoid aspirin and nsaids like ibuprofen if you have chickenpox. Aspirin in children has been shown to cause reyes syndrome, seriously affecting the liver and brain, and ibuprofen has been shown to cause a serious skin reaction if chickenpox is occuring at the same time of use. So stick with children's tylenol for now, and regular tylenol for yourself. But consult with your doctor first to see if they are okay for you and your child to take.
6.)Prevent scratching: to do this you can have you or your child wear mittens or soft socks over the hands. Because scratching the spots can expose you to infection, I recommend also trimming you and your child's fingernails so less damage can be done. This is especially useful in that any attempt at scratching during sleep, ends up not cutting the skin, introducing germs inside.
7.) When you are going to bed, make sure to wear looser clothing that is not so restrictive on your skin. You want to let your skin breathe
When to call your doctor for chickenpox if the chickenpox treatment at home is not effective or signs of chickenpox have not improved.
