8 Foods You Should Have During Periods
Periods are all about mood swings, painful cramps, and fatigue. It is that time of the month and some of us make the most of it by having our favourite cheat meals. Well, we have all the reasons to have our favourite fried foods and calorie-packed desserts during our periods but they only do harm to our body. There are some foods that help you have a less painful, happy period.
Here are 8 foods to include in your diet during periods.
1. Yogurt: Giving your body a dose of calcium during this time is great. Nothing like having a bowl of yogurt while you are on your period. Yogurt helps in maintaining a good balance of calcium in the body and helps in preventing mood swings and bloating.
2. Water: Drinking a lot of water is always important, and this is especially true during your period. Staying hydrated can reduce your chances of getting dehydration headaches, a common symptom of menstruation. Drinking plenty of water can also stop you from retaining water and bloating.
3. Quinoa: Quinoa is rich in nutrients such as iron, protein, and magnesium. It’s also gluten-free, so it’s a great food for those with celiac disease. Plus, it has a low glycemic index, which means you’re likely to feel full and have energy for a long time after eating it.
4. Chicken: Chicken is another iron- and protein-rich food you can add to your diet. Eating protein is essential for your overall health, and it can help you stay full and sated during your period, curbing cravings.
5. Bananas: So many of us suffer from bloating during periods. Bananas are the best fruit you can have during this time. Bananas have B6 vitamins and potassium which are great for your digestive health and mental health during this time. Having a banana reduces the amount of water your body retains, this further makes you feel less bloated.
6. Dark chocolate: A tasty and beneficial snack, dark chocolate is rich in iron and magnesium. A 100-gram bar of 70 to 85 percent dark chocolate contains 67% of the RDI recommended daily intake for iron and 58%magnesium.
7. Melon: Having a hard time buttoning those skinny jeans that just fit a couple of days ago? Breathe easy: you didn't gain weight! In the days leading up to your period, your body begins storing sodium and fluids. Instead of trading in your favorite pants for sweats and leggings, try munching on honeydew melon to de-bloat.
8. Peppermint tea: A study suggests that peppermint tea can soothe the symptoms of PMS. Specifically, it can relieve menstrual cramps, nausea, and diarrhea.
Certain foods are great to eat during your period, while others can worsen your symptoms. If your periods are particularly painful, to a point that you have difficulty functioning, see a doctor. This could be a symptom of a deeper health issue.
